I am no expert at Barrett, nor am I an expert at fly fishing for bass. But, I am friends with many who have expertise in fly fishing Lake Barrett in the San Diego Fly Fishing Club. And specifically, I’m honored to call 3 experts friends that have generously offered their guidance on Lake Barrett, it’s history and how to fly fish it in the Spring. This document is a summary of the guidance I have gathered from these experts for fly fishing lake Barrett. -tim

After 25+ years of hard business travel i have accumulated almost 200 of my favorite DIY fly fishing places on my Garmin Nuvi GPS; mostly in the US including an extensive list of DIY places in MT, WY, CO, CA, HI, UT and ID but also across the world like New Zealand. Free Updates from me forever....well, until i stop travelling and finding these places.

The download is a zip of a KML file. all mapping programs support KML files, but it's easiest just to import this file from Google Earth. Once imported you'll have all Google Earth's features including a satellite view and mapping capability. You can also import directly into Google Maps by creating a new map.

Updated 10/03/25

This is the map i wish i had my whole life. I’m a business traveler and i always bring a fly rod with me on business trips. The problem is figuring out where to go and the time it takes just figuring out where to park a rental car. it’s takes hours of internet research just to figure out the closest fishable river …that has public access. I have wasted time doing it, hundreds of times. Then you have to figure out where to park your rental car in a public area. And you only have a couple hours of evening hatch after work. Well, after 2 million miles on United; 25+ years of hard business travel (and fly fishing vacation travel) i have accumulated over 250 of my favorite fly fishing places on my Garmin GPS.

The download is a zip of a KML file and instructions. All mapping programs support KML files. It’s easiest to import this file from Google Earth. Once imported you’ll have all Google Earth’s features including a satellite view and mapping capability.

To import into Google Maps with a web browser:

here are the steps to open a KML file in Google Maps:

Open Google My Maps in your browser.

Create a new map.

Click on Import.

Navigate to your KML file and select it.

The KML file will be imported into your map.

Most of the locations are in the US including an extensive list of DIY places in CA, MT, WY, CO, UT, HI and ID but also in New Zealand. Free Updates from me forever as long as i keep updating this list.

if you own a garmin (and i assume others) GPS, ~$35, then you can import all these locations and save them as favorites on your device

Updated April 27, 2020: An extensive and detailed guidance and directions document on how to successfully find & Hike and fly fish the Upper Kern River by way of The Forks of the Kern Trail. Also included in the download is my most recent forks backpacking list. I donate all proceeds from the downloads of this guidance to CalTrout.

Updated: July 7, 2025

I am privileged to know that first stretch of 10 miles of river like the back of my hand. After decades of backpacking the Forks of the Kern Trail to get to the hallowed waters of the Upper Kern River. After 10s of thousands of fly fishing casts in the Upper Kern. After testing hundreds of flies. I have developed extensive and detailed guidance (backpacking and fly fishing) and directions on how to successfully do the Forks with the sole intention of helping people out.

I have blogged about many of the experiences i have had at the Forks. And that ultimately meant I was getting overwhelmed with email, txting and phone calls for support. So, this is an efficient way to take care of everyone that needs the guidance and directions.

Also included is my most recent backpacking list for the Forks of the Kern. For the fly fisherman that backpacks forgetting something can be crushing.

All proceeds I collect from selling this $5 guidance document is donated to CalTrout, a great organization that does great things for the trout habitat of California.
