I read your fishing blog every so often and really enjoy your detail, and narrative. Thank you for sharing!

I have to say, however, your Rattlesnake Bite Rescue was an eye opener.

I too fly fish, but have yet attempted incorporating overnight backpacking with fly fishing into my lifestyle. I’d like to, and know I am capable, but my life has not allowed me to get that going yet.

I do a lot of walk and wade fishing on the Lower Yuba River, and when spring and summer hits, the rattle snakes come out! I also own an InReach, but I often take its utility for granted. My walk and wade trips are often only 3 to 6 hours, not overnight. Nevertheless, if I was injured, or snake bit -even on these short expeditions, I could end up in a world of hurt! Thanks to your story, I now see how important having that InReach might be!

My InReach will now be an essential part of my gear - with as much importance as the right flies, right rod, right wading gear, etc!!!

Hi Tim, I'm an avid reader of yours and I appreciate your insight and knowledge and also wanted to thank you and your team on clearing out the trail. we fished Tuesday evening and stayed overnight and left the following morning to avoid bear activity as we had one follow us to newer campgrounds going towards painters. as of today, July 7th, we encountered 3 bears at the first few campgrounds going up past the little kern . After observing them, we realized they were constantly looking up trees for food staches, maybe they are more active there than past years due to the fires. in my previous experiences before the floyd meadow fire, I had never encountered a bear so it was very surprising to me, although they were very skittish. The flows have definitely dropped and the fishing was superb, I hope to see you on the trail sometime. Today we will be fishing above JDB.
